May is Better Speech & Hearing Month!

Did you know that core boards are a type of visual that combine symbols and words of core vocabulary to support communication? Did you know that 'core vocabulary' makes up 70-90% of what we say on a daily basis? Students can use core boards by pointing to the symbol or word they would like to communicate. They can make requests, comment, answer questions, or participate with others by using a core board.

The playground communication board is an incredible way for all of our students to participate in communication and learning on the playground. It brings inclusivity to all of our students who demonstrate communication needs to share and play with others! While some of our students are nonverbal or demonstrate difficulty with speech and communication, this allows them to point to what they want to play on the playground, or to communicate with their friends while outside.

It is important to our speech pathologist, Mrs. Gomez, that ALL of our students know that their words matter. This means everywhere, especially in fun places like the playground!

Our Crook County School District #1 Assistive Technology Team went to a conference this past Fall to learn more about the importance of assistive technology. They brought back a lot of amazing information, ideas and resources to share with our schools. While at the conference, our team was selected as the winner of a playground communication board and a vinyl hallway communication board. The district was able to purchase an additional playground communication board. The playground boards are located at Moorcroft and Sundance Elementary School. Check out the playground board at Sundance Elementary School below!
